Festival put on hold until next year

LUZERNE TWP. – This weekend was supposed to have been the first Old-Fashioned Community Day at Patsy Hillman Park, but park board members learned that it takes longer than a month to put together a quality event. “We had to cancel. It was too short of notice,” said Nena Kaminsky, who had proposed the community picnic at last month’s park board meeting. “The people I had called and contacted already had commitments for this weekend.” Kaminsky said she contacted a variety of entertainers and vendors, but to no avail.

“We’re going to postpone it until next year and we’re going to do it even bigger and better,” Kaminsky said. “It gives us a year to get it together.”

Kaminsky said the park will be in better shape next year too, with the completion of a water line to all of the pavilions, and improved electrical service. Depending on when the event is held, there could even be public sewerage serving the restrooms at the park, Kaminsky said.

Kaminsky said the park board is still discussing whether to hold the event late in the summer as it was planned this year, or to move it to coincide with the fireworks display sponsored by the Greater Brownsville Area Chamber of Commerce on July 3, providing a full day of activities at the park for the holiday.

“We’ve got a year to plan, so it’s going to be something nice,” Kaminsky said.

The park board will hold its next regular business meeting Aug. 26, at the Hillman Pavilion at the park.
