Barbara Lou Adkins
Barbara Lou Adkins, 77 of Ravenswood, W. Va., died August 19, 2009 in Ravenswood Village Center, Ravenswood, W. Va. She was born July 7, 1932 in Uniontown, Pa. to William A. Knight and Lois (Baker) Knight.
Barbara spent her early childhood in Farmington, Pa. and attended Wharton Township Grade Schools. She graduated from South Union High School, class of 1950 in Uniontown in the top 10% of her class.
Prior to her marriage to Carlos Raymond “Ray” Adkins of Ethel, W.Va., she worked for Reliable Transfer Uniontown as a Bookkeeper/Secretary. She also worked one year for the U.S. Navy as a clerk typist at the Arlington Pynes in Arlington, Va.
Barbara and her husband moved from Logan, W.Va. to Ravenswood in May 1959. Barbara was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher. She also served as Sunday School Secretary and Clerk/Treasurer. She was a member of the Francis Crooks Circle having served as Secretary/Treasurer.
Barbara worked for 20 years at Jackson General Hospital in the Medical Records Department. She studied and earned the title of AHIMA, belonging to the WVHIMA and the AHIMA. She was also secretary to the medical staff for two years. She retired from the office of Dr. James T. Hughes after 12 years.
She is survived by her 5 Children: Lois Lorraine Adkins, Harrisburg, Pa., Scott Raymond Adkins, Ravenswood, W.Va., John Mark Adkins and wife Diana, Ravenswood, William Ezra Adkins and wife Sue, Jacksonville, Fla. and Thomas Ray Adkins and wife Sharon, Ravenswood; 3 Grandsons: William, Nathaniel and Jacob; step Granddaughter Sandra White; 2 Step – Great Grandchildren: Christian and Alexandria White; Brother William P. Knight and wife Karen, Markleysburg, Pa.; 2 Sisters: Dorothy Jean Swager and husband Richard, Goffstown, N.H. and Betty Ann Christian and husband Raymond, Ogden, Utah; many Nieces and Nephews; 3 Special Nieces and 1 Special Nephew.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Carlos “Ray” Adkins of 52½years and a sister Lois Lorraine Stafford.
Friends may visit the ROUSH FUNERAL HOME in Ravenswood, W. Va. on Saturday, August 22, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. where services will be held Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Mark Price officiating.
