Alma Shomo Hawkins Gibson, 88, formerly of Uniontown, PA died Thursday evening, August 20, 2009 at Beacon Ridge Nursing Center, Indiana, PA. She was born on September 11, 1920 in Robinson, PA and was the daughter of the late Frank and Adda Belle Cunningham Shomo. Alma was a graduate of Indiana Teachers College and was a Home Economics teacher at Jefferson-Morgan High School from 1941 -1948. She then married Earl L. Hawkins and the couple moved to Uniontown and raised their son J. Brent Hawkins. Earl died, March 17, 1971, Alma remarried a high school classmate, Charles Gibson, in 1983. Alma was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and a member of the choir for many years. She was an active golfer and enjoyed her time with her “Card Club” over games of “500”. Alma was also a devoted wife and mother and was a den mother for her son’s Cub Scout troop and helped out in many other charitable and church organizations.

Alma, in addition to her husband’s, was preceded in death by her brother, Curtis Shomo and sister, Isabelle Hoskinson;

She is survived by her son, J. Brent Hawkins of Torrington, CT, a sister, Kathleen Mitchell and her son, Jack Mitchell, of Connecticut, and her special niece, Adda Lee Hoskinson and her husband, Dr. Richard Seifert of Robinson, PA.; Step-daughters, Linda Salguera of Latrobe, PA and Judy Brumfield of Gainesville, FL and by many nieces and nephews on the Hawkins’ side of the family. There will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at a date and time to be announced.

Private burial will be in Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, PA.
