California trailing in semifinals

Jake Soy caught three touchdown passes and Billy Creason returned a blocked punt as the first-half clock expired, leading second-ranked Northwest Missouri State to a 49-24 lead over California (Pa.) through three quarters Saturday in the NCAA Division II semifinals. Northwest Missouri State called a time out, forcing the Vulcans to punt. Tyler Shaw blocked the punt, and Creason scooped up the ball for a 15-yard touchdown return with no time remaining in the half.

Blake Bolles connected with Soy twice in the first half and once in the third quarter. Jordan Simmons returned a kickoff 81 yards with 7:55 left in the third quarter, and Creason had a 5-yard touchdown run.

Windell Brown scored a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Josh Portis hit AJ Jackson with 8:09 in the third quarter for a 25-yard touchdown pass, and found Terrance Moore on a 62-yard bomb at the end of the third quarter.
