California’s Gates reaches championships

California (Pa.) sophomore Melissa Gates qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in the 50 freestyle at the 13th-annual James E. Longnecker Invitational hosted by Grove City. California scored 603 points in the event, enough for third place behind Grove City’s 1,132 and Washington & Jefferson’s 619.

Gates’ time of 0:23.49 tied the pool record set by 8-time national champion Kaitlyn Orstein. Gates also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 0:52 and added a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.26.
