By Frances Borsodi Zajac 4 min read

Herald-Standard readers donated another $1,030 to the Give-A-Christmas fund, driving the total to $23,031. “I’m very proud of our readers who continue to donate to this fund, especially during these difficult economic times. It means a lot,” said Sparkle, campaign mascot.

The latest donations came from Lemont Furnace, Uniontown, Hopwood, Farmington, Masontown, Perryopolis, Brownsville, Grindstone, Gibbon Glade and Chalk Hill.

The Christmas star received some nice notes with the donations.

Calvin United Presbyterian Church in Brownsville wrote, “May God bless you for all the good work you do. Bless our servicemen and servicewomen and keep them safe. Bless and watch over all children and bless them in the new year and keep them safe and healthy.”

The Masontown Business and Professional Women’s Club wrote that they “would like to donate the enclosed check in memory of Mary Girod who was a member of BPW for 57 years. Continue your good work. Many people are very appreciative of all you do.”

“As a group we decided to forgo our normal office gift exchange and, instead, to donate to a local charity. Please see that a needy family benefits from our donation,” wrote the administrative staff of the Brownsville Area School District, who included Dr. Philip Savini, Dr. Harry Miale, Edward Yorke, Sherry Kottke, Keith Harvey, Bernie Mancini, Gayle Mayton, Linda Workman, Donna Wasko, Melanie Bagwell, Lana Konopka and Shelley Williams.

The Little Yellow Bucket Fund of the Hopwood United Methodist Church wrote, “God bless you.”

“Have a holly, jolly Christmas and keep up the good work,” wrote Joan Steratore of Farmington.

“Hope this will be blessed for someone this Christmas. In loving memory of James ‘J.J.’ Landman, and Helen and Earl Landman. God bless all of you this Christmas,” wrote Wilbur, Patricia Landman, Terri Landman, Harry Hixson and Porky Landman of Lemont Furnace.

“Hope this will be your nicest Christmas ever and that you reach your goal plus some extra to do for so many of the less fortunate,” wrote Connie Barney of Uniontown, who donated in memory of Kim Moyer Karschner.

“Dear Sparkle, Please accept our donation to help you in reaching your goal. God bless you and thank you for all the wonderful work you do to help make a difference in families in our area. We give our donation in memory of our parents, Glenn and Edith Honsaker and Charles and Annabelle Livengood, and our sister, Dorothy (Livengood) Wilson. Always remember ‘Jesus is the reason for the season,”‘ wrote Ron and Eleanor Honsaker of Masontown.

“Thank you so much for all the kind words,” said Sparkle. “But remember that we have only a few days left in the campaign to reach our goal of raising $20,000 for the Salvation Army so if you want to participate, please do so now.”

Contributions will be accepted until noon on Dec. 23 with the final amount published in the Christmas Eve edition of the paper.
