Carl C. Clements Sr.

Carl C. Clements Sr., 76, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., died Monday, June 15, 2009, in his home.

He was born January 5, 1933, in Waynesburg, a child of Charles and Pearl Jolliffee Clements.

A resident of Lehigh Acres for the past 15 years, he previously lived in Norristown.

He was employed as a vice president for Core States Bank.

Mr. Clements was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ida M. Battistoni Clements; children Carl C. (Samcera) Clements Jr. of Lehigh Acres, Pamela J. (William) Valerio of Norristown, Charles A. (Carol) Clements of Crossville, Tenn., and Martha (James) Waychoff of Schwenksville; and nine grandchildren.

Hazel Velma Dean Watters

Hazel Velma Dean Watters, 97, of Carmichaels, died Monday, June 29, 2009, in Precious Moments Personal Care Home, Carmichaels.

She was born September 8, 1911, in Frosty Run, Whiteley Township, Greene County, a daughter of Reason and Clara Ruse Dean.

Mrs. Watters was a homemaker and resided most of her life in the Cumberland Township area.

She was a member of Carmichaels Women’s Civic Club, Warrior Trail Association and Town & Country Garden Club of Rices Landing.

Mrs. Watters enjoyed gardening and spending time with her beloved cats and dogs.

She was a member of Fairdale Free Methodist Church, Carmichaels.

On June 16, 1951, she married Paul T. Watters, who died November 23, 1970.

She was the last of her immediate family.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are two brothers, John Lindsey Dean and Clarence Russell Dean, and three sisters, Martha Sloneker, Elizabeth Lashinsky and Laura Hostetler.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Humane Society of Greene County, 183 Jefferson Road, Waynesburg, PA 15370.

Opal Moon

Opal Moon, 82, of Jefferson, died Monday, June 29, 2009, in her home.

She was born July 14, 1926, in Lippencott, a daughter of Geophy and Ada Camp Shriver.

Mrs. Moon was a homemaker.

She was a member of Jefferson Church of Nazarene.

On September 6, 1947, she married Harold E. Moon, who died September 29, 2007.

Surviving are five children, Linda Smitley of Mather, Brenda Freeman of Birmingham, Ala., Cynthia Gaydos of Naples, Fla., Pam Broadwater of Jefferson and Gary Moon of Jefferson; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Sylvia Filius of Dallas Pike, W.Va., and Cora Williams of Oregon.

Deceased are a son, Harold E. “Butchy” Moon Jr.; three brothers, George Shriver, Carl Shiver and Charles Shiver; and a sister, Betty Whiteman.

Richard J. Riggen

Richard J. Riggen, 61, of Waynesburg, died at 12:19 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg, as a result of an apparent heart attack.

He was born Friday, February 27, 1948, in Fairchance, a son of the late John H. Riggen and Elsie Guthrey Riggen.

Mr. Riggen, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, had lived in Greene County for more than 35 years.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Riggen worked construction as a roofer for more than 40 years.

Surviving is his wife, Winifred Fowler Riggen, whom he married Saturday, January 4, 1969.

Also surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James A. and Tracy Riggen of Waynesburg; a granddaughter; a sister, Kathrine “Kap” Sutton of Ohio; a brother, John “Crick” Riggen Jr. of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

Willis C. Stickles

Willis C. “Skip” Stickles, 67, of Clarksville, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

He was born April 20, 1942, in Carmichaels, a son of Elaine Paxton Stickles Campbell and the late John Stickles.

Mr. Stickles served in the U.S. Army and worked as a coal miner in Clyde Mine. At one time, he was a truck driver.

He attended Clarksville Missionary Church.

Mr. Stickles lived most of his life in Clarksville.

He was a member of American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491, both of Carmichaels, and Moose Lodge 461 of Waynesburg.

On December 15, 1995, he married Norma McCollum, who survives.

Also surviving, in addition to his mother and wife, are three daughters, Heidi Hody of Grafton, Ohio, Amy Dina of Grafton and Jennifer Owens of Brook Park, Ohio; three stepchildren, James McCollum of Clarksville, Heather Detrick of Clarksville and Catherine Phillips of New Sewickley; nine grandchildren; a brother, Ford Campbell of Spraggs; and two sisters, Rebecca Church of Roaming Shores, Ohio, and Patricia Smoggie of Waynesburg.

Deceased are three brothers, John Stickles, Mark Campbell and Lair Campbell, and a sister, Kathryn Stickles.

Ronald

Johnston Sr.

Ronald “Jughead” Johnston Sr., 63, of McDonald, Tenn., formerly of Carmichaels, went to be with Jesus Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in his home, after a brief illness.

He was born July 2, 1945, in Bobtown.

Mr. Johnston retired from Gateway Mine in Greene County.

He had attended Church of God in Carmichaels. He was saved June 24, 2009.

On September 3, 1969, he married Judy Patterson, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Rhonda Holbert and husband Jeff and Sherri Chapman and husband Phillip, both of Cleveland, Tenn.; three granddaughters; two sisters, Gloria Bonfili and husband Bruce of Morgantown, W.Va., and Doris Epperson and husband Don of Decator, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased is a son, Ron Johnston Jr.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Family Home Care and Hospice, 175 24th Street, N.W., Cleveland, TN 37311.

Charles Franklin Pettit Sr.

Charles Franklin Pettit Sr., 76, of Avella, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in Washington Hospital.

He was born April 6, 1933, in Greene County, a son of Charles R. and Elizabeth Huffman Pettit.

Mr. Pettit worked as a mechanic at Tri-State Engineering for 20 years and later at Porter Built.

He was a member of SNPJ in Avella and American Legion Post 643 in Avella.

Mr. Pettit was Protestant.

In 1956, he married Lauretta Leona Yater, who died August 31, 2008.

Surviving are two sons, Charles F. Pettit Jr. of Avella and Larry Pettit of Fairmont, W.Va.; two daughters, Betty (Michael) Ice of Fairmont and Freda (Gary) Flickner of Houston; two brothers, Terry Pettit of Washington and Danny Pettit of Prosperity; a sister, Leila J. Barnhart of Richeyville; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Deceased are a son, Robert L. Pettit, and a great-grandchild.

Charles E. Burke

Charles E. Burke, 89, of Mt. Morris, died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009, in Mon General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

He was born Saturday, October 4, 1919, in Blacksville, W.Va., a son of James Burke and Mamie Patterson Burke.

Mr. Burke lived most of his life in Mt. Morris.

He was a veteran, having served with the U. S. Navy on the USS West Virginia during World War II.

Mr. Burke was a retired coal miner, having worked at Consolidation Coal Co. Humphrey 7 Mine in Mt. Morris.

On Monday, January 5, 1948, he married Betty Stapinsky, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, John C. and Rosa Burke of Morgantown and Harold E. (Chuckie) and Louise Burke of Vienna, W.Va.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wilma Farace of Mt. Morris and Anna Ruth Moore of Blacksville; and several nieces and nephews.

Elsie M. Knight

Elsie M. Knight, 92, of Waynesburg, died Friday, July 3, 2009, in Golden Living Center, Waynesburg.

She was born September 12, 1916, in Harveys, a daughter of Rex and Nannie McCoy Knight.

Miss Knight resided most of her life in Jackson Township, Greene County, where she raised chickens and sold eggs.

She was a member of Holbrook Christian Church, where she served as church pianist. She also was a member of Harveys Grange.

She was the last of her immediate family.

Deceased are two sisters, Hildred Stolze and Ferne Knight.

Margaret Burnham

Margaret (Peg) Burnham, 94, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Carmichaels, died at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009, in The Forum, Tucson.

She was born June 29, 1915, in Cumberland Township, a daughter of Frank Moore and Frances Baily Areford Ross.

On November 21, 1942, she married Earl N. Burnham, who died February 20, 2007.

For many years, she and her husband operated The Dairy Bar in Carmichaels, where they enjoyed the townspeople. After selling their business, the couple moved to Tucson to retire.

Surviving are two sons, Ben Burnham of Tucson and Jeffrey Burnham and wife Deann Neugehauer Burnham of Vail, Ariz.; a daughter, Patricia Ann Berkey and husband Scott of Hopkinton, Mass.; twin grandchildren, Elizabeth and Allison Berkey; a niece, Barbara Aspey; and a nephew, Kenneth Titus II.

Deceased are a brother, Leroy Ross; and a sister, Edna Titus.

Harold Hunt

Harold Hunt, 88, of Coal Center, died Thursday, July 2, 2009.

He was born Saturday, April 2, 1921, in Taylortown, Dunkard Township, a son of Floyd and Margaret Ross Hunt.

Mr. Hunt graduated from Point Marion High School and also from Michigan Technical Institute. He had attended California State College.

He served for four years as a corporal in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was retired from Robena and Maple Creek mines, where he was an electrician for 39 years. Upon retiring, Mr. Hunt loved to spend his winters camping in the Florida Keys.

Mr. Hunt was a member of California United Christian Church, Monongahela Valley Lodge 461 F&AM of California, Sons of the American Revolution of Waynesburg and California Area Historical Society.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 63 years, Audrey Duvall Hunt; a son, Dennis Hunt and wife Ginny of El Paso, Texas; and a grandson, and great-grandson.

In addition to his parents, deceased are a son, Darryl Keith Hunt, formerly of Fairbanks, Alaska, who died in 2003; two sisters, Jean Work and Virginia Molnar; and two brothers, Roger and Wayne Hunt.

Marjorie P. Bowman

Marjorie P. Bowman, 64, of Landis, N.C., died Saturday, July 4, 2009, in Bob and Carolyn Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, N.C.

She was born May 29, 1945, in Woodsfield, Ohio, and raised in Mt. Morris, a daughter of the late Thomas and Etta Roach Bowman.

Mrs. Bowman moved from Morgantown, W.Va., to Landis in May 1999.

She was a self-employed accountant and tax preparer.

Surviving are three sons, Todd and Kevin Strope of Morgantown and Richard Strope of Kannapolis; three daughters, Rachelle and Laura Strope of Kannapolis and Helen Koontz of Moundsville; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and the father of her children, Richard Lee Strope.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Russell M. Bowman, who died in 2003.

Ronald P. Lemley

Ronald P. Lemley, 68, of Mt. Morris, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, in Sundale Nursing Home, Morgantown, W.Va.

He was born February 16, 1941, in Perry Township, Greene County, a son of the late Walter H. Lemley and Evelyn Wade Lemley.

Mr. Lemley was a retired construction worker. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Pam Lemley of Mt. Morris; two granddaughters; a great-grandson; and seven nieces. In addition to his parents, deceased are his wife, Mary Jo Lemley, and a sister, Norma L. Lewis.
