Community center seeks performers for event

2 min read

The East End United Community Center is looking to showcase local abilities in a new fundraising endeavor called “Uniontown’s Got Talent.” A takeoff on the popular television talent show “America’s Got Talent,” “Uniontown’s Got Talent” is looking for singers, dancers, bands, comedians, dramatic performances and others to perform. Contestants must be between seven and 50 years old. “It just seems that people are so enamored with these reality shows and we were looking for something new and innovative that Uniontown hasn’t done before,” said Dr. Barbara Wright, executive director of the East End United Community Center in Uniontown. “My focus is on the community so we want to do things to pull people together. We are trying to create a synergy, one of excitement.”

Auditions will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8 at the State Theatre Center for the Arts, located at 27 E. Main St., Uniontown.

There is a non-refundable audition fee for these closed auditions, which will have a celebrity judge.

Anyone passing the auditions will be included in a talent show that begins at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the State Theatre.

“Whoever wins is going to get accommodations for one and airfare to the closest audition for either ‘American Idol’ or ‘America’s Got Talent’,” said Wright.

She also noted, “We’re looking for corporate or community sponsors for the event. We’re going to have a program booklet.”

Tickets for the show will go on sale in September.

To register for the Aug. 8 auditions, call the East End United Community Center at 724-437-1660 or pick up an application by stopping by the center, located at 150 Coolspring St., Uniontown. Applications may be made up to the time of the audition.

The East End United Community Center began in 1975 in the former East End School and then moved to a home at 395 E. Main St. Last year, the center relocated to its long-awaited new facility, a 6,000-square foot building at 150 Coolspring St.

The center offers after-school tutoring for youths in kindergarten through sixth grade as well as a career development program for adolescents ages 14 through 17, sponsored by the Workforce Investment Board, and Our Caring Corner, a grief support program for grieving children and their families. The center is currently running its summer academy from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays for youths in kindergarten through age 18.
