North Union supervisors post new speed limit
LEMONT FURNACE – The North Union Township supervisors on Tuesday adopted an ordinance setting the speed limit on Braddock View Drive at 25 mph. The road, which runs through the Mount Braddock Industrial Park, is in bad condition and motorists driving 40 or 45 mph risk damaging their vehicles, said Thomas Kumor, chairman of the board of supervisors. Supervisor Curtis Matthews said the township accepted ownership of the road, which is less than a mile long, from Fay-Penn Economic Development Council many years ago and it needs to be reconstructed.
In unrelated business, the supervisors appointed Kumor to represent the township on Fayette County’s earned income tax committee.
Matthews said a state law passed last summer does away with the 560 tax collectors now working across the state and replaced them with 69 tax collection districts. Every municipality in the county can have a representative on the county district’s committee, he said.
In a separate matter, the supervisors approved a $46,657 payment to Stefanick Construction of Dunbar for the construction of two pump stations for the Mount Independence water line extension project.
Matthews said work on the pump stations is progressing. Electrical work and the roofs have yet to be completed, he said, adding that the line could be ready for residential connections in the fall.
In other business, a resident told the supervisors that illegal dumping is increasing in the Oliver area and a public sewage system is needed to prevent sewage from washing on to her property.
