King Coal meets to finalize festival plans
The King Coal Association met on July 9 to work on finalizing plans for the upcoming annual festival, which will be held Aug. 22 through Aug. 29. The weeklong festival will include a golf tournament, cheerleading competition, carnival, parade, pageant, and various other events. Tickets are still being sold for the King Coal Carnival. Tickets cost $10 each and act as a ride pass for one entire evening at the carnival. Without a ticket, each individual ride will cost a certain amount of tickets, which can be purchased at the entrance to the carnival.
Advance tickets can be purchased at Carmichaels Shop ‘n Save, the fire hall or from members of Carmichaels Chamber Commerce or Lions Club.
Carmichaels Fire Department has issued a Wii boxing challenge to all fire departments in the tri-county area. They are asking local fire departments to put their best man in the tournament, which will be held during the King Coal carnival. The first round will take place Aug. 27 and the finals and championship matches will take place Aug. 28.
Boxing on both evenings will begin at 7:30 p.m. There is an entry fee of $10 per person and the winner will be awarded $100.
In addition to local fire departments, the public is encouraged to participate.

Applications are now being accepted for the King Coal Cheerleading Competition. The competition will be held on Aug. 22 at the Carmichaels Area High School football field. For further information concerning the event, contact Tricia Lohr at 724-966-9880.
Information for the 2009 art contest is available. All artwork submitted must be related to coal or the Coal Show and be original. Up to three pieces can be submitted per entrant. The 56th Bituminous Coal Queen Pageant will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 23 at the Carmichaels Area High School Auditorium. There will be 14 candidates from local schools in the tri-county area vying for the crown and title
