Laurel Highlands School District is offering review classes tonight and Wednesday evening for people interested in taking the examination to serve as paraprofessionals in the district.
According to the No Child Left Behind legislation, paraprofessionals employed by the Laurel Highlands School District must be rated as highly qualified.
In order to meet this criterion, the individual must have earned two years of college credit, have earned an associate’s degree or higher or have passed a state Department of Education-approved test in the areas of reading, English and math.
The test will be administered at the high school from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Review sessions for this test will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at the high school.
To reserve a seat for the review sessions and test, interested applicants should call Beverly Popson, director of pupil personnel services, at 724-437-2821, extension 1030. Those participating should bring a check for $25 made payable to Laurel Highlands School District to the first session. Upon taking the test, the $25 fee will be refunded to the applicant.
Sentence upheld
The state Superior Court upheld a prison sentence of 15 to 30 months that a Greene County man received after he was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol last year.
Gerald C. Phillips, 49, of Waynesburg appealed the sentence that Greene County Judge H. Terry Grimes imposed in May 2008 after a jury found him guilty in March 2008.
Waynesburg Borough police filed DUI charges and summary traffic citation for not using a turn signal against Phillips following an April 2007 traffic stop.
