King Coal officials prepare for event

CARMICHAELS – On July 23, the King Coal Association met to tie up loose ends concerning the rapidly approaching festival. Entrants for the King Coal Parade, which will be held on Aug. 29, should contact Jerry Newman at 724-966-5865. The candidates for the Bituminous Coal Queen Pageants will kick off their festivities on Sunday. They will attend a picnic to meet the other contestants and be informed of all pageant information. Also during the week, the contestants, along with King Coal Association committee members, will travel to Morgantown, W.Va., for dinner and a performance at the Creative Arts Center on the West Virginia University campus. Reigning Coal Queen Maura Andrews will be present at the activities as she prepares to relinquish her crown. The 2009 Bituminous Coal Queen will be crowned on Aug. 23 in the Carmichaels Area High School auditorium.

Vendors for the Coal Show are being sought. Anyone interested in being a vendor during the festivities should call Mike Riggen at 724-966-2506.

Carmichaels Fire Department has issued a Wii boxing challenge to all fire departments in the tri-county area. They are asking local fire departments to put their best man in the tournament, which will be held during the King Coal carnival. The first round will take place Aug. 27 and the finals and championship matches will take place Aug. 28.

Boxing on both evenings will begin at 7:30 p.m. There is an entry fee of $10 per person and the winner will be awarded $100. In addition to local fire departments, the public is encouraged to participate.

There are no age limits, and all entrants will be placed in the same bracket.

Applications are now being accepted for the King Coal cheerleading competition. The competition will be held on Aug. 22 at the Carmichaels Area High School football field.

Information for the 2009 art contest is available. All artwork submitted must be related to coal or the Coal Show and be original.

Up to three pieces can be submitted per entrant. Artwork will be displayed in the Carmichaels fire hall from Aug. 25 to noon Aug. 29.
