Bowlby Library announces August events
The Eva K. Bowlby Public Library in Waynesburg recently announced the following upcoming events to be held in August: The Bowlby Public Library is offering a class on food preservation on Tuesday, Aug. 4 from 2 to 3 p.m. Carolyn Wissenbach, Penn State Extension Educator, will be present to explain the various methods to preserve food in a safe and healthy manner. The Bowlby Library is an official collection site for the United Way’s “Stuff The Bus” program to help low-income students this coming fall. You can help out by bringing new backpacks, lunchboxes, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, book covers, notebooks, and folders and dropping them in the specially marked box located in the foyer at the Library by Aug. 6.
The library is hosting a talent show on Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 3 until 5 p.m. as part of their Summer Reading theme “Be Creative @ Your Library.” The staff is looking for musicians, singers, dancers, comedians, and performers of all ages to participate and share their unique talents. Call the library if you would like to showcase your talent.
The library is sponsoring their Annual Pittsburgh Zoo Trip on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost of tickets: Ages two and under are free, children ages 3-12 the cost is $8, and for ages 13 and up the cost is $12 per ticket. The deadline for ordering tickets is Aug. 10. Transportation is available but space is limited. Register in the children’s department or contact the library for more information.
The Creative Writing Group meets at the library every Monday evening at 6 p.m. Colleen Nelson is facilitating this group and their creative energies. New members are always welcome.
The library is offering two free computer classes during the month of August. On Thursday, Aug. 6, from 5 to 6 p.m., the class will be exploring “AntiVirus Software and Protecting Your Computer.” On Thursday, Aug. 27, from 5 to 6 p.m., the class will offer a class called “You, Your Family and Social Networking.” Both classes are free and open to the public. Class size is limited, so register early.
The Bowlby Library Book Club will be meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m. The book discussion will be “The Shack” by William Young. New members are encouraged to attend.
Library Night with the Washington Wild Things is Wednesday, Aug. 19. Bring the whole family out to the ballpark. Tickets are only $5 per person and can be purchased through the library.
T.O.P.S. ~ Taking Off Pounds Sensibly is a weight management support group that meets every Saturday at the library from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. New members are always welcome.
The public is invited to attend the Scrapbooking Club that meets at the library twice a month on Saturday afternoons, Aug. 8 and 22, from 1 to 3 p.m.
The Adult Literacy program at the library offers free test preparation for the GED, Civil Service exams, driver’s licensing and life skills. Also, any adult wishing to brush up on their basic reading and math skills can do so at no charge through the literacy department at the library. The department also offers free tutoring for school-age children through the summer months. Now is the time to focus on difficult subjects (reading, writing, and math) in a relaxed atmosphere while preparing for the fall. To make an appointment, or more information, call the library.
The Bowlby Public Library Board of Trustees will meet at the library on Monday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m. The board meetings are free and open to the public. Community members are encouraged to attend. If there are specific issues you would like to raise or have interest in making a brief presentation during a community forum – which is held immediately preceding the board meeting – please contact the director well in advance to give the library the best opportunity for accommodating you on the evening’s agenda.
