Perry Township hires summer worker
PERRY TWP. – Perry Township supervisors voted Tuesday to hire a part-time summer worker and advertise for a second laborer. Supervisors A.J. Boni and Janet Galla agreed to hire Mark Gera to work 32 hours a week at a rate of $6.50 an hour. Gera is a resident of Perry Township and will attend Wheeling Jesuit University in the fall.
Boni said the township was short an employee and in need of extra help.
Supervisors said Gera’s duties will include, but are not limited to, routine road maintenance, grass cutting and cleaning.
In addition, supervisors also voted to advertise for a part-time laborer with a commercial driver’s license.
In unrelated business, supervisors said they are already receiving complaints regarding unkept properties and warned property owners to keep their grass cut.
Boni said township code enforcement officer Roger Adams will not issue warnings but will cite all property owners who fail to maintain their yards.
“We’re not giving out warnings, we’re giving out citations,” Boni said, noting that a few landlords have been neglecting their rental properties.
“I can’t believe grass is this big of a deal, but we have renters who walk through knee-high grass to get to their homes. If you own property, cut your grass,” he said.
In other business, Boni alerted residents that Layton Bridge will be closed from 6 a.m. Wednesday to noon June 11.
Boni said the bridge is being closed while filming for a television show or movie is done there, noting that the filming, which was approved by the state Department of Transportation, caused the township’s summer paving project to be pushed back.
Boni expressed dismay that the township has yet to receive official notice from PennDOT alerting supervisors to the bridge closure.
