Dock to Lock set for May 9
WAYNESBURG – The Greene County Department of Recreation will host the 2009 Dock to Lock 5K Run/Walk & 10K Run beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 9, along the Greene River Trail. Participants can sign up for the race and pay a $20 registration fee on the day of the race. Registration and packet pick-up will begin at 7:15 a.m. at the Rices Landing Fire Hall in Rices Landing, Pa. At 8:30 a.m., participants will be bused to the starting line of the Greene River Trail at the Greene Cove Yacht Club in Jefferson Township. New to the race this year is the 10K run, which was added in the hopes of attracting long-distance runners, as well as appealing to runners who travel into the county for the race.
“A lot of people don’t like to drive a great distance to run a short distance,” said race director Albie Rinehart about adding the 10K run.
Proceeds from Dock to Lock benefit the Department of Recreation’s summer Day Camp program, which offers free activities for county children.
Rinehart encourages former Day Campers to participate in the race as a way to give back.
“This is the 17th year for the summer Day Camp,” Rinehart said. “We’re trying to appeal to those kids who benefited from Day Camp to enter the race and show their support so we can continue to have the program.”
Following the race, awards will be given for the top three male and female runners and walkers overall, as well as the top three male and female runners and walkers in various age categories. Refreshments and a random drawing for prizes will also be held after the race at the Rices Landing Fire Hall.
Sponsors of this year’s Dock to Lock include the Greene County Commissioners, Baily Insurance, First Federal Savings and Loan of Greene County, First Student, Greene Cove Yacht Club, WANB Radio and Waynesburg University.
