Connellsville to hold memorial service

2 min read

CONNELLSVILLE – The Connellsville Police Department will remember those who have given their lives to protect their communities on Friday, when officers observe Peace Officers Memorial Day. Attorney Jack Purcell will be the keynote speaker for the event that begins at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Plaza adjacent to the city municipal building. “We have invited all of the local law enforcement agencies throughout the region and anticipate a good turnout,” said Connellsville Police Officer Association President and department Cpl. Bill Hamerlee. “We also extend an invitation to the public to join with us to remember the fallen officers.”

Former President John F. Kennedy established the observance in 1962 as a way to recognize and honor police officers, past and present, especially those who gave their lives or were disabled in the performance of their duties.

Also scheduled to take part in the service are the American Legion Honor Guard, former city police officer and bagpiper Vincent Traynor and the Rev. Ralph Prinkey, former Connellsville Police Auxiliary member and now pastor of the Penn Hills Baptist Church in Verona. Connellsville police Chief Ed McSheffery (left) and Cpl. Bill Hammerlee discuss plans for the Friday observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day that will be held at Veterans Plaza beginning at 10 a.m. Patty Yauger
