Georges supervisors to stem parking on School Road

2 min read

GEORGES TWP. – Georges Township supervisors took the first step toward prohibiting parking on a road in Oliphant. Supervisors Frank Churby, Mike Bartock and Mark Migyanko unanimously voted to authorize the borough secretary to advertise an ordinance that would prohibit parking on School Road. The ordinance also will allow for fines to be imposed on people who continue to park their vehicles on the road.

Supervisors said they plan to take action on the ordinance at their next meeting, which is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. June 9.

In unrelated business, supervisors agreed to send a letter to the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) regarding traffic problems in the township.

Churby said residents have complained about speeding on Morgantown Road (Route 119) and passing on Georges-Fairchance Road (Route 857).

Because both are state-owned roads, the township can only request that PennDOT look into the matter.

Churby said the letter will ask PennDOT to reduce the speed limit on Morgantown Road, which is currently posted at 45 mph, and will ask PennDOT to consider placing “no passing” signs on a portion of Georges-Fairchance Road.

“Something needs to be done to take care of the problems,” he said, noting that residents have expressed concerns about safety on both roads.

In other matters, supervisors thanked the volunteers who recently helped pick up litter and tires in the township. Bartock said about 25 people volunteered.
