Smithfield council announces storm water improvement project
SMITHFIELD – Smithfield Borough Council announced Tuesday that a storm water improvement project for Water and Dils streets will begin June 1. No exact cost has been determined because some line items need to be finalized, council said. Morgan Excavating of Belle Vernon was awarded the contract to rectify the problem of water backing up in the storm drains.
Residents should be alert for any lane closures that may occur on both Water and Dils streets, council said.
The project is estimated to take 30 days to complete.
In other business, council discussed plans for Memorial Day, asking that residents clean their sidewalks and cut their grass in preparation for the holiday.
Also, the borough asked that residents cooperate and obey the “no parking” signs that will be placed on Liberty and Main streets during the festivities.
Mayor Chuck Cieszynski said he is looking for volunteers to help with the placement of American flags on the graves of veterans buried in the cemetery at Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Anyone wishing to help should meet at the cemetery on Route 119 at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Council members also discussed the concern of overgrown grass at 17 Washington Way. The grass has not been mowed this season and is at least waist high.
Council is looking into the possibility of fining property owners who do not keep lawns mowed. Because borough solicitor Gene Grimm was not in attendance at the meeting, council will consult with him before any further steps can be taken.
