Low voter turnout reported in county

5 min read

WAYNESBURG – A low number of Greene County voters cast their ballots during the primary election Tuesday, which consisted mostly of races for various school board seats and municipal offices and only one countywide race. Frances Pratt, Greene County director of elections and voter registration, said Wednesday that the 2005 Primary Election, in which the same seats were up for re-election, had a higher voter turnout than the 2009 election. “(The voter turnout) was a little over 30 percent four years ago,” she said. “It certainly wasn’t the weather that contributed to the low voter turnout (this year).”

As of Wednesday night, a total of 6,924 ballots were cast for the Greene election, which included absentee ballots. There are 25,668 registered voters in the county.

For countywide positions, incumbents Richard C. Ketchum (sheriff) and Gregory P. Rohanna (coroner) ran unopposed on the Democratic ticket and will be uncontested in the November general election as no Republican candidates filed.

In the race for jury commissioner, Lynn Leathers won 62 percent of the unofficial vote over Melaney Dufalla by a total of 2,779 to 1,701 votes. Leathers will face Republican incumbent Rosalind B. Laur, who ran unopposed on the Republican ticket.
