Greene coroner determines hunter’s death an accident

By The 1 min read

WHITELEY TWP. -The Greene County coroner’s office has officially ruled that a Smithfield man’s death Monday in Greene County was an accident. State police said family members discovered the body of Mark Gerald Petrun, 53, in a wooded area on Rocky Ridge Road after he failed to return home from squirrel hunting.

Officers said Petrun died from a single gunshot wound, and it was determined that the bullet came from Petrun’s gun.

Deputy Coroner Mary Lewis said that Friday that an autopsy conducted earlier this week confirmed that Petrun died from an accidental gunshot wound to the chest.

She said that investigators determined that Petrun slipped on a log, causing his gun to discharge.
