Toy drive to start
Local briefs The annual Fayette County Toys for Tots drive begins next week with registration Monday and Tuesday at Uniontown Mall.
Each registration will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Fayette County children 12 years old and younger.
Applicants must bring an Electronic Benefit Card or Medical Card for parent and child to be registered, as well as proof of date of birth for the child, photo identification for the parent registering the child and proof of residency in Fayette County.
Applicants are advised not to contact the mall regarding the event as no additional details are available.
Phone meeting set
U.S. Rep. John Murtha will host a telephone town hall from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday for 40,000 voters aged 55 and older in Allegheny, Armstrong, Cambria, Fayette, Indiana, Somerset and Westmoreland counties.
This is the fifth in a series of telephone town halls that will provide constituents of the 12th Congressional District a chance to participate in a question-and-answer session on a range of issues with Murtha.
At 10 a.m., calls will go out asking residents to participate in the event. Murtha will provide a short update on current legislation and then open it up for questions.
Writing event set
The second annual “Night of Writing Dangerously” will take place from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday at Connellsville Junior High East.
School librarian Holly Stuller said the event allows students the opportunity to choose from four interactive writing workshops and 10 writing activities, including poker poetry, word crossfire, story starters and chalk talk to test their writing skills.
Students will be encouraged to complete one writing assignment that will be presented at a future coffeehouse event.
Teachers Gail Cuneo, Amanda Gorecki, Ben Haines and Melissa Monyok will offer instruction in script, poetry, creative and sensory forms of writing.
Flu shots offered
The state Department of Health will be offering flu shots for seasonal flu only to coal miners and their spouses and the general public.
Clinics will be held at the Greene County Health Center at 432 E. Oakview Drive, Waynesburg, and are by appointment only. For more information and to schedule an appointment, call 724-627-3168 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Health center officials request that the public not leave messages on the answer machine after hours for appointments.
Honors planned
The Connellsville Area Historical Society will celebrate Veterans Day and honor the 2009 “Pride in Connellsville Area Poster and Poetry Contest” winners at a Nov. 10 reception at the Connellsville Presbyterian Church.
Society President Karen Hechler said the event is to show appreciation for area veterans and encourage the young people to research the rich history of Connellsville.
