Cicio wins Red Ribbon 5K
Running Connellsville junior Nick Cicio completed the 5K course around the grounds of Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus faster than anyone else on Saturday, Oct. 31 to win the 4th annual FCDAC, Inc., Red Ribbon 5K Run/Walk. Cicio’s winning time was 19:02. Connellsville freshman Michael Jacobyansky was second in 19:25 with Connellsville’s Francis Molinaro third in 19:29.
Jen Sober, of McHenry, Md., won the women’s 5K run in 20:28. Markleysburg’s Julie Friend was second in 22:25 and Mount Pleasant’s Dana Newlin finished third in 23:07.
Lemont Furnace’s Kevin Cech was the men’s 5K walk champion in 33:17. Dunbar’s Ken Landman finished second in 34:24 and Brownsville’s Frank Ptak was third in 34:53. Dunbar’s Debbie McGee was the first woman to finish the 5K walk with a winning time of 35:19, 13 seconds ahead of Hopwood’s Gloria Antoon. East Millsboro’s Linda Savochka was third in 36:25.
Volleyball Vulcans victorious, 3-2
California (Pa.) rallied from a 2-0 deficit, rallying for a non-conference 3-2 victory Friday on the road at Ashland. The Vulcans lost the first two sets, 25-22, 25-21, and won the final three, 25-14, 25-22, 18-16.
California improves to 29-5 overall, while the Eagles slip to 15-13.
Joanna Nist finished with a double-double for the Vulcans with 24 kills and 23 digs, both season highs. Ludmila Amaral finished with 12 kills and Ashley Moore had a double-double with 11 kills and 18 digs. Julie Paronish had a team-high 30 digs. Renata da Silva dished out 55 assists and had five digs to become the first player in school history with 5,000 assists and 1,000 digs in her career.
Soccer Cal loses 1-0
California (Pa.) was eliminated from the PSAC women’s soccer tournament Friday with a 1-0 semifinal loss to Kutztown. The Vulcans entered the match ranked No. 16, while the Golden Rams were ranked 24th.
After a scoreless first half, Kutztown’s Chelsea Bressler scored an unassisted goal in the 67th minute.
California keeper Paula Jackson finished with two saves.
California (15-5-1) now awaits word to see if it will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II tournament.
W&J PAC champs
Freshman midfielder Chrissy Marcius scored the match’s lone goal Saturday, leading Washington & Jefferson to a thrilling 1-0 victory at Grove City in the PAC women’s soccer championship.
The Presidents successfully defended their conference title with their first victory at Grove City since the 2005 season. Washington & Jefferson (12-6-2) earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
After a scoreless first half, Marcius netted the game-winning goal in the 60th minute. Washington & Jefferson keeper Stephanie Saussol turned aside 10 shots to preserve the shutout.
Football Jackson nominated
California (Pa.) senior wide receiver A.J. Jackson has been selected as a Super Regional One finalist for the 2009 Harlin Hill Trophy, awarded annually to the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year.
Zach Amedro, West Liberty (W.Va.) State quarterback, Michael Harris, Shippensburg wide receiver, Trevor Harris, Edinboro quarterback, Alfonso Hoggard, Clarion running back, and Thomas Mayo, Concord (W.Va.) wide receiver, were also nominated.
Jackson leads the PSAC with 64 receptions and 12 receiving touchdowns. He is second in the conference with a career-high 894 yards, and has four 100-yard games this season.
