Cal women get bid

Soccer The California University of Pa. women’s soccer team will play in the NCAA Division II Championship for the first time after receiving an at-large bid as announced by the soccer committee Monday night. The Vulcans will play W.Va. Wesleyan in a first-round match Friday at Kutztown. W.Va. Wesleyan earned an automatic bid into the 48-team tournament by virtue of winning the WVIAC tournament.

Kutztown will host the winner Sunday.

The Vulcans won a program-record 16 games and earned their first PSAC-West title.

Volleyball Zavatchen honored

Bethany (W.Va.) College’s Jessica Zavatchen was selected as the PAC Freshman of the Year as well as earning second-team all-conference honors after setting a Bison single-season record of 989 assists. The Laurel Highlands graduate was second on the team in both digs (284) and solo blocks (22).

Waynesburg University’s Rachell Storm was a second-team selection in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference for the second year in a row. The junior libero was second in the conference in digs per set (6.80) and total digs (592).

Bethany coach Courtney Kline was the Coach of the Year, while Thomas More (Ky.) sophomore was the PAC Player of the Year.

Wrestling Garber top wrestler

Waynesburg University junior Nick Garber was named the PAC Wrestler of the Week after starting the season 4-0 and winning the Messiah Invitational title at 141 pounds. The Waynesburg Central graduate won his first three bouts by fall, and then defeated Elizabethtown’s Eric Rhoads in the title match, 7-5.

Football Dawson lauded

Waynesburg University quarterback Brad Dawson was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Yellow Jackets’ 38-17 victory over Thiel. Dawson completed 23-of-37 passes for 306 yards and three touchdowns.
