Planning commission approves sewage plans

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

The Uniontown Planning Commission approved motions Monday to allow two area projects to continue with sewage plans. After discussing a proposal by Veolia Environmental Services to allow the waste management company to tap into the Greater Uniontown Joint Sewage System for landfill wastewater disposal, the commission approved the plan by unanimous vote.

Under the terms of the proposal, Veolia will construct and connect a pipeline from the Chestnut Valley Landfill on Route 21 in McClellandtown and then tap into the existing sewage system on Route 21 in South Union Township.

The plan estimates about 25,000 gallons in wastewater entering the sewerage system from the landfill each day.

According to the proposal, Veolia explored multiple options for wastewater management, including upgrading the individual treatment facility they currently operate at the landfill.

However, Veolia officials determined that tapping into the existing sewage system was the only viable option for the company.

In approving the measure, planning officials said the proposal complies with plans and ordinances already in place.

In a second vote, the commission unanimously approved a sewage plan for the Uniontown Elm Street Senior Housing Project on North Gallatin Avenue.

The plan includes providing sewage connections for 36 housing units to be developed on property currently owned by the American Legion Post 451.

The total flow of wastewater from the planned housing center would average bout 14,000 gallons daily.

Project developers will hook up with the existing public sewage system and the wastewater will be treated at the Greater Uniontown Joint Sewage Authority Treatment Center.
