Second H1N1 death confirmed
The Fayette County Coroner’s office confirmed a second swine flu death Monday. Dr. Phillip Reilly, coroner, said that a 5-month-old girl from Uniontown died from the H1N1 flu virus.
Reilly said the infant died Nov. 9 and was pronounced dead by the attending emergency room physician at Uniontown Hospital.
According to Reilly, tests conducted during an autopsy show that the infant suffered from pneumonia, with the underlying cause being the H1N1 virus.
Reilly said he received the test results Monday afternoon.
He declined to release the infant’s name, citing privacy reasons, and said the state Department of Health had been notified.
The health department declined to release specifics regarding the case, but also confirmed Fayette County’s second H1N1 flu death.
Earlier this month, a 31-year-old Connellsville woman died from the H1N1 virus.
Statistics from the state Health Department show a total of 29 people have died of swine flu in Pennsylvania.
There have been 9,460 confirmed or probable cases of swine flu in the state.
