Man sentenced in shooting case
A Uniontown man will spend the next 20 to 40 years in a state prison, following his sentencing for shooting and seriously injuring a Redstone Township man earlier this year. Darroll Dewitt “Baby D” Gregg, 19, was sentenced for attempted homicide for shooting Edward Harper, 30. The shooting occurred at Harper’s home at 1018 Main St. on March 18.
Earlier this month, Gregg was convicted of that charge, criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person following a trial before Fayette County Judge Gerald R. Solomon.
State police alleged that Gregg told two other men that he was going to “spank,” or shoot and kill, Harper because of past problems with Harper’s family.
Also charged was Stephan Fitzgerald, 19, of Smock and Darrin Mackey, 17, of Republic. The case against Fitzgerald is still pending, but prosecutors dropped the charges against Mackey.
Fitzgerald faces the same charges as Gregg.
Police said the men went to Harper’s home, where he got into a fight with them. When Harper tried to go back inside, one of the men shot him in the head and chest.
Police said that the men were trying to rob Harper of money and marijuana.
Fitzgerald’s trial will be delayed until a suppression-related hearing in his case, scheduled for January.
