Brownsville authority schedules smoke test
The Brownsville Municipal Authority will smoke test on High Street, First Street and Orange Alley in Hiller on Monday and Tuesday. Testing will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This smoke testing is being done to locate faulty sewer connections. Residents can expect to see some smoke coming out of their sewer roof vents during the test. If a residence has a faulty sewer connection, smoke might enter the house through the faulty connection. If this occurs, do not be alarmed, the smoke is non- toxic, non-staining and free of oil and colored particles and the smoke creates no fire hazard. Residents are encouraged to open windows and doors to allow the smoke to dissipate.
In the event residents have direct contact with the smoke, they may experience some minor irritation of the respiratory passages. Anyone with asthma, emphysema or some other respiratory condition should notify the authority ahead of time.
If traces of smoke or odors enter a building, it is an indication that sewer gases may also enter. Evidence of smoke in a house should be immediately reported to the authority. Location, identification and correction of the source of smoke entering a house are strongly recommended.
Correction of any defects in the pipes and sewer on private property is the responsibility of the owner.
During the day prior to the above date, residents are urged to pour water down their drains in their home to ensure the U-bend sewer traps are full.
