Loud talker redoux

By Herald Standard Staff 3 min read

The following is from Cathy at St. Vincent DePaul Society regarding last week’s column. The young man who speaks a little too loudly may also be experiencing hearing loss, or he may live with older parents or another individual with hearing problems

.

He may be accustomed to being in noisy situations where he works, operate heavy construction machinery, be a motorcyclist, or attend noisy functions such as sports bars and rock concerts

.

It’s not uncommon for young people to lose their hearing gradually and not realize it until someone notices. This young lady may be doing her friend a favor by discussing her thoughts with him.

Your readers can search “It’s a Noisy Planet” for great information about hearing conservation and other worthwhile subjects pertaining to their hearing.

If someone in their families has problems with hearing loss, we have information and help at St. Vincent DePaul Society.

Now, hear this

Hear Fayette is not in competition with any of the audiologists or hearing aid specialists here or elsewhere.

n Our job is to be here when people need help getting affordable or free hearing aids or free telecommunication equipment.

n We also teach computer skills face-to-face, which is necessary for people with hearing loss. Call to sign up for free lessons.

n We educate the community about better ways to communicate with people who can’t hear well.

n We attend health fairs, visit other human service agencies, and supply printed information about hearing loss.

n We have a support group to share our experiences.

We thank Cathy for this very valuable information that can help those with hearing loss.

Fayette Hall of Fame

The Fayette County Sports Hall of Fame holiday social will be at 7 p.m. at the Flamingo Restaurant on Dec. 3. Complimentary food will be served. The social is free to all current members, and new memberships/renewals will be accepted at the event.

Well over 500 sports-minded people have joined the Hall of Fame during the last 15 months, and all 2008-2009 yearly members still have time to re-up in order to retain full nominating and voting privileges for the coming year.

Also, up-to-date members will get the first opportunity to purchase tickets for the banquet in June.

Some people believe that the next banquet will be even bigger, so don’t get shut out.

The Fayette County Sports Hall of Fame leaders thank everyone for their support.

Wellness tip

As we approach the end of the year, we remind everyone that there are more New Year’s resolutions about starting to workout than any other resolution, as well there should be.

However, by February, almost half have quit, and by mid-year, only a small percentage could still be classified as physically active.

If you want to get a head start on a New Year’s resolution, the Uniontown Salvation Army Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk and 1/2 Mile Mini-Trot (ages 2-11) is a great opportunity, and this community event offers something for all ages.

Some of your friends will be there. Please join us.

Coach’s Comment: Many good things will never be attempted if we must first overcome all objections.

Have a safe and an enjoyable Thanksgiving, and thanks for making the Coach a part of your Steelers day.
