Soup kitchen will mark Thanksgiving tomorrow

BROWNSVILLE – The Brownsville Soup Kitchen will be closed on Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t mean the holiday won’t be celebrated. The traditional turkey dinner will be held from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The soup kitchen is located in the basement of the Brownsville Borough Building. According to Jamie Brink of Fayette County Community Action, which operates the soup kitchen, preparations are already under way, with turkey roasts being cooked in advance. Several whole turkeys have also been donated and will be roasted for the meal, Brink said.

“We’ll have turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie,” Brink said.

While the soup kitchen regularly serves 75 people a day, Brink said 100 or more meals will be served for Tuesday’s Thanksgiving celebration, including meals that are delivered by volunteers to residents of the Bank Building apartments and Mulligan Manor who may not be able to get to the soup kitchen.

Brink said volunteers from Cluss Lumber will be delivering the meals. Brink said that while there are plenty of volunteers for the special dinner, more people are needed on a regular basis.

“They don’t have to volunteer for a week or a month, they can do it on a daily basis,” Brink said.

Brink said volunteers are mostly needed in the morning hours to help prepare and serve the lunches, which are served from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. Anyone wishing to volunteer time at the soup kitchen can contact Brink at 724-437-6050, extension 1264.

The soup kitchen will be closed on Thanksgiving and the Friday following Thanksgiving. Brink said the kitchen also may be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 25.
