Fayette County man killed in I-70 crash
A Fayette County man was killed Wednesday morning in a crash involving four vehicles in Westmoreland County. State police Trooper Brian King said Luther J. Grimm II of Acme died from injuries suffered in the crash, which occurred at 10:10 a.m. on Interstate 70 near the Madison exit in South Huntingdon Township.
According to King, Grimm was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee west on Interstate 70 when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a car driven by John Bigos of Andover, N.J.
Grimm’s vehicle then continued traveling west on Interstate 70 and crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer truck driven by Jeffrey Smith of Donalds, S.C.
King said Grimm’s vehicle then went airborne over the tractor-trailer truck and landed in front of a second tractor-trailer truck driven by Edward Bartholomew of Slippery Rock.
Bartholomew’s truck crashed into Grimm’s vehicle, King said, noting that all vehicles had been traveling west on Interstate70.
King said Grimm may have suffered an unspecified medical problem that caused him to lose control of his vehicle because witnesses reported Grimm had been slumped over and was leaning on the driver’ side window.
Grimm was transported from the scene to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh where he died, King said.
Officials said the crash snarled traffic and caused backups to New Stanton. The wreckage was removed from the road by around 11:30.
The crash remains under investigation.
