Masontown

Masontown police said that a man who walked onto the grounds at Masontown Elementary School on Wednesday morning and removed an American flag from the school flagpole turned out to be a substitute custodian working at the school. Police Chief Joseph Ryan said that as the custodian removed the flag he allegedly told a teacher nearby that the flag was “a disgrace” before folding it and taking it from school property. Ryan said that the flag was in poor condition.

After removing the flag, the teacher reported the incident to school officials, who then reported the apparent theft to police.

Ryan said Thursday that soon after school officials notified police of the incident, they discovered that the custodian had removed the flag and that no crime had been committed.
