George Gilbert Bowman Sr., age 70, of Smithfield, Pa. died Wednesday, October 7, 2009. He was born on February 17, 1939 in Martin, Fayette County, Pennsylvania the son of Harry James Bowman and Viola Mae Hillen Bowman.

He was employed for 27 years as a Welder/Fitter at HBC Barge in Brownsville, Pa. and then 11 years as a Bus Driver with Laidlaw and First Student Transportation in the Albert Gallatin School District.

George was a member of Smithfield United Methodist Church.

He loved to play horseshoes ride his bike and greatly enjoyed the outdoors.

George was predeceased by his parents; by two brothers, Harry Bowman and Charles Bowman; three sisters, Eva Jane Yeager, Dorothy Fraley and Gertrude Bowman; and his son-in-law, Robert Riggar.

Surviving are: his loving wife of 47 years, Gladys D. Harbarger Bowman; children: Malissa Riggar, James Mark Bowman and wife Daphine, Robert Dwayne Bowman and wife Sally, Sharon McKee and husband Larry, Linda Bowman, and George Bowman Jr. and his wife Sara; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sister, Betty Hicks; brothers: Donald Bowman and wife Diane, George “Sandy” Bowman and wife Martha and George “Butch” Forsythe and wife Hazel; and several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive Friends in the DEAN C. WHITMARSH FUNERAL HOME, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance, Pa. today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Monday, October 12, 2009 until 11 a.m., the hour of Service with the Rev. Jay Polowsky officiating.

Interment will follow in Mount Moriah Baptist Cemetery, Smithfield, Pa.

Visitation was also held on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.
