Hope Hathaway Appelbaum

Hope Hathaway Appelbaum, 84, of Carmichaels, Pa., died on October 9, 2009, in the Washington Hospital, Washington, Pa. She was born on September 1, 1925, in Carmichaels, the daughter of the late Edward and Laura MacPhail Hathaway.

Surviving are six daughters: Toby (Donald) Karl, Atlanta, GA., Deena Hathaway, Novato, CA., Janne Appelbaum, NY, NY., Lisa Parker (Michael), Carmichaels, Pa., Eve Appelbaum (Jeffrey Washburn), Atlanta, GA., Laura Schlesinger (Michael), Carmichaels, Pa. She is also survived by two sisters: Emily Mitchell, Peru, NY, Rev. Miriam L. Hathaway, Cooperstown, NY; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She is survived by countless friends and her beloved cat, Ching-a-ling.

Deceased are her husband, Theodore Charles Appelbaum, and two brothers, Walter and John Hathaway.

Hope attended the Borough School and Cumberland Township High School, Carmichaels, Pa., and moved to Washington, D.C. at the age of 17 to work for the FBI during WW II. After the war she married and raised her family in Washington, D.C. She began her career in the newspaper business in the 1960s and became a member of the Washington, D.C. press corps during the Reagan administration. She retired several years ago to her home in Old Town Carmichaels. She was a member of the Hewitt Presbyterian Church, Rices Landing, Pa.

Throughout her life she was active in the art community. In the early days of cable television, she produced her own program which had lively interviews with artists and authors from the D.C. community.

She loved books and conversation. She touched many lives and will be sadly missed.

Friends will be received in the home of Laura and Michael Schlesinger at 208 South Market Street in Carmichaels on Friday, October 16, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Interment will be private at Laurel Point Cemetery in Carmichaels at a later date.
