Hospital opens new unit

An open house of Reflections at Highlands, a gero-psychiatric unit at Highlands Hospital, Connellsville, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the hospital, 401 E. Murphy Ave. A ribbon cutting, tours and refreshments will be provided.

Highlands Hospital has expanded its Behavioral Health Services unit with this first gero-psychiatric unit in Fayette County. Two new psychiatrists, Dr. Roy Monsour and Dr. Jeffrey Wilson, both of whom are board-certified in geriatric psychiatry and who share more than 40 years of experience in the field, will staff the unit.

Greensburg

Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette Inc. will hold a program to honor its adult education students for outstanding achievement from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at its offices at 219 Donohue Road, Greensburg. Dr. Donald E. Sheffield, president and chief executive officer of TAME Inc., will be guest speaker. His topic will be “Practice Makes Perfect – Not! Excellence is a Habit.”

Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

Monessen

FedFirst Financial Corp., parent company of First Federal Savings Bank, has named R. Carlyn Belczyk to its board of directors. She currently holds the position of secretary, treasurer and shareholder with Guthrie, Belczyk & Associates P.C., located in Washington.

Belczyk, 58, began her career in public accounting in 1986 and, together with Charles R. Guthrie, formed Guthrie, Belczyk & Associates in September 1993.

In addition to graduating magna cum laude from the University of Utah, Belczyk is a licensed certified public accountant in Pennsylvania. She is accredited in business valuation and is a licensed certified valuation analyst. Additionally, Belczyk has received specialized training in non-profit and governmental auditing and continuing education in business valuation.

Belczyk is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She is also a member of the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts and the Center for Economic and Industry Research.

She is a lifelong resident of Monessen.

In 2001, Belczyk was honored by the Washington Chamber of Commerce with the Outstanding Woman in Business Award and in 2006 was a recipient of the Athena Award presented by the Washington-Greene County Chapter. She was also a runner-up in 2005 for the Small Business Award presented by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Pittsburgh

SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives) Pittsburgh will present “Small Business Basics,” workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at its new location, DeVry University, second floor, 210 Sixth Ave., Pittsburgh. The entrance is directly across from the Wood Street trolley station.

The workshop, presented by working professionals, helps new business with studying the legal requirements of starting a new business and covering key topics that will impact the success or failure of the business.

The agenda will include discussion about developing a business plan, financing, marketing, insurance, human resource management, record keeping, obtaining small business loans and business taxes for small business.

There is a fee to attend. Registration and a continental breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m. Discounted parking is available in the building garage below street level.
