Council to host afterschool event

By Herald Standard Staff 2 min read

The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. (PIC) will host its third annual Lights On Afterschool rally from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus. The Lights On Afterschool event will raise awareness of local afterschool programs and the importance of family involvement in the education of young children. PIC operates the Fayette County Enrichment Program in the Connellsville, Brownsville and Uniontown area school districts. The primary focus of this afterschool program is to address the needs of targeted at-risk students and their families in academic, character, social, and cultural education activities that improve scholastic performance and individual development.

This year’s event is a collaborative effort of the Fayette County Enrichment Program, Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County, and Dads Matter of Fayette County. All three programs promote the importance of family involvement in the cognitive and educational development of young children.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Donald Sheffield, the creator of the DARE2XL curriculum used by the Fayette Enrichment Program, and author of the book “Practice Makes Perfect – Not.”

Also, children from the PIC afterschool programs will perform a series of character-building skits and motivational raps.

There is no charge to attend Lights On Afterschool and refreshments will be provided.

PIC, a nonprofit organization, operates employment, education, and training programs through an organizational structure of three divisions – Early Childhood Development, Education and Workforce Development.

The PIC is dedicated to educate, encourage and empower individuals and families in Westmoreland and Fayette counties.
