Dunbar man faces charges after incident with police
A Dunbar man is facing more than a dozen charges after he allegedly fled from police and then assaulted several state police troopers in South Union Township Sunday night. Trooper Andrew S. Reith said Duane Roy Hughes, 43, was charged before Magisterial District Judge Ronald J. Haggerty Sr. with fleeing police, drunken driving, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, public drunkenness, careless driving, reckless driving and nine other traffic violations following the incident.
According to Reith, the incident began at 8:24 p.m. when Reith tried to initiate a traffic stop on Hughes’ vehicle in Uniontown. A chase ensued, during which Hughes drove in the oncoming lanes of traffic on Lebanon Avenue and Dixon Boulevard, ran multiple stop signs and eventually crashed into a guardrail, Reith said.
Reith said prior to crashing his car, Hughes also almost struck at least one other vehicle head on.
After the crash, Reith said Hughes fled from police on foot and was shot multiple times with a Taser gun but he continued to flee officers.
After several hundred yards, Reith said Hughes entered a wooded area where he tripped and fell.
As Reith attempted to take Hughes into custody, he continued to struggle and officers again used a Taser gun to try and subdue him, Reith said.
Reith said Hughes kicked and hit him in the torso multiple times during the struggle and also kicked another trooper.
No troopers were seriously injured as a result of the confrontation.
Uniontown police assisted at the scene.
Hughes was placed in the Fayette County Prison on $25,000 straight cash bond following his arraignment.
A preliminary hearing will be held at a later date before Magisterial District Judge Joseph M. George Jr.
