Bridge to open

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Point Marion Bridge will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday on the Fayette County side of the bridge on Route 88 in Point Marion.

The ceremony will feature state Department of Transportation Secretary Allen D. Biehler, along with other state and local officials.

The new $21 million bridge, which crosses the Monongahela River, is part of the state’s commitment to address structurally deficient bridges, according to the state Department of Transportation, District 12.

The bridge includes a wide sidewalk to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists who use the nearby trail. The bridge carries Route 88 between Greene and Fayette counties.

The replacement of a 79-year-old structure began in January 2008.

Officials have said there is an average of 3,700 vehicles that travel over the bridge daily.

Immediately following the parade, as in past years, all the parade participants are invited to a party at Brodak’s Shop ‘N Save.
