Colonials shut out Mustangs, 1-0

Albert Gallatin won its final game of the season in dramatic fashion with a 1-0 shutout over Laurel Highlands in Section 4-AAA boys soccer action at Albert Gallatin. The Colonials’ Kyle Oldland broke a scoreless tie with 13 seconds remaining in the second half to send Albert Gallatin (2-10, 5-12) on a winning note.

Shawn Smearcheck stopped nine shots in net for the Colonials, while Laurel Highlands’ Lucas Tarr had six. Albert Gallatin had 6 shots, and the Mustangs had 9.

Laurel Highlands travels to cross-town rival Uniontown Thursday.

Girls volleyball

Geibel Catholic 3, California 0 – Geibel Catholic picked up an important Section 5-A victory over California Tuesday at Geibel with a sweep.

The Lady Gators (8-2, 9-6) won by scores of 25-8, 25-15, 25-14.

Carly Ciarochi had 12 kills and 14 service points, including 4 aces. Teammate Marney Hillen added 6 kills and Breanne Dowden led the Lady Gators in assists with 16.

Maria Ross had 16 service points, including 3 aces for the home team.Geibel Catholic’s volleyball team picked up an important Section 5-A victory over California Tuesday at home with a 3-0 sweep.

Frazier 3, Carmichaels 0 – The Lady Commodores continued their dominance in Section 5-A action by sweeping the Lady Mikes at Frazier.

Frazier (10-1, 10-1) won by scores of 25-9, 25-8 and 25-7.

Amanda Pato led her team with 14 assists, 8 kills and 12 service points, while Giovanna Bitonti added 11 assists and 12 service points.

Caitlin Fidel had 8 kills for the home team, and Amber Baughman chipped in with 13 service points. The Lady Commodores hit the road Thursday in a Section 5-A game at California.

Carmichaels falls to 4-7 in section play and 4-11 overall.

Laurel Highlands 3, Brownsville 0 – The Fillies picked up a sweep over the home team in Section 7-AA play.

Laurel Highlands won by scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-14.

The Lady Falcons’ Emily Konter had 5 service points, 2 kills and 1 block. Teammate Stephanie Crable had 4 service points and 1 assist, while Chevelle Stoken chipped in with 2 service points. Ayssa Settles added two service points for the Lady Falcons.

Brownsville falls to 5-6 in section play and 9-7 overall. The Lady Falcons hold Senior Night festivities in tonight’s non-section match with Yough.

Washington 3, Uniontown 0 – The Lady Prexies picked up a sweep over Uniontown in Section 7-AA action at Uniontown.

Washington won by scores of 25-23, 25-13 and 25-22. Uniontown falls to 2-8 in section play and 5-10 overall. The Lady Raiders travel to Laurel Highlands Thursday in the cross-town rivalry.

Men’s soccer

Gannon University 3, California (Pa.) 0 – The Vulcans dropped a tough PSAC-West contest at Erie.

After a scoreless first half, Gannon scored three goals in the second to drop California to 2-5 in conference play and 10-5 overall.

Women’s soccer

Gannon University 2, California (Pa.) 1 – The No. 20 ranked Vulcans could not overcome a two-goal deficit in PSAC-West action at Erie.

California drops to second in conference standings with a league record of 7-3-1 and an overall record of 12-4-1.
