East Allegheny shuts out Brownsville Area, 42-0
NORTH VERSAILLES – In its first seven games this season, East Allegheny scored 51 points. In less than three quarters at EA’s Churchman Stadium Friday night against visiting Brownsville, the Wildcats scored 42 points to record their initial win of the season, 42-0 over the wingless Falcons in a Class AA Interstate Conference game.
Unable to sustain any offense and unable to stop the Wildcats, Brownsville (1-7, 1-7) coach Von Braddock noted that, due to sickness, only 13 Falcons were at practice Wednesday, and 23 were in uniform Friday night.
“When you miss practice, and have that many players missing practice, that’s what happens,” Braddock said. “But it’s still no excuse for the way we played. We missed every assignment, offensively and defensively, played undisciplined and were unable to make any plays. We only have four seniors on the roster and have been playing nine freshmen. We’re young and it’s been a learning experience for our underclassmen, but it’s time to make the plays.”
East Allegheny enjoyed excellent field position in the first half and scored on all five of its first-half possessions. EA’s first-half scoring drives were 27, 55, 52, 43, and 57 yards long and the Wildcats piled up 114 yards rushing and 124 passing in the first half.
For the night, Brownsville managed 38 yards rushing and one yard passing and recorded its initial offensive first down at 5:06 of the second quarter. Brownsville’s other first down came via an EA penalty in the third quarter.
“We’re still working, but we made stupid penalties (eight in the first half), didn’t play disciplined, and didn’t block,” Braddock continued. “Nothing we tried went right. We didn’t have a good effort in the first half and at the half we told the players they have to find the answer.”
If there was a bright spot for Brownsville, it was the play of freshman quarterback Brandon DeCarlo, who was under constant pressure and had little time to find open receivers.
Despite completing 3-of-8 passes for one yard, DeCarlo “has made progress all year, every week,” Braddock noted. “He did a decent job tonight.”
EA (1-7, 1-7) was led by quarterback Jody Harris, who opened the scoring with a one-yard run in the first quarter and tossed touchdown passes of 25 yards to Rarji Neal and 48 yards to Delvinn Coleman. Brownsville was led by sophomore running back Tre’ Hall with 36 yards on 11 carries.
Brownsville will conclude its regular season Friday at Waynesburg Central.
