Brownsville panel

By Herald Standard Staff 2 min read

Editorial board endorses three Of the four candidates on the ballot for Brownsville Borough Council, the Herald-Standard Editorial Board endorses Democratic Party incumbents Jack Lawver, Tracy Sheehan Zivkovich and Tom Bush for the three open seats.

Lawver and Bush are on both the Democratic and Republican ballots while Zivkovich and challenger Ross Swords will appear only on the Democratic and Republican ballots, respectively.

After a thorough review of the candidates, we think that Brownsville Borough is moving ahead with redevelopment and code enforcement and the three incumbents – Lawver, Zivkovich and Bush -deserve another term in office.

Lawver has long impressed us as a competent and accessible member of council, and Brownsville residents can expect to continue to benefit from his 16 years of experience on the panel. He brings a calm, reasoned approach to the borough’s business and can be counted on to do the right thing for the residents.

Bush, a police officer for the borough, also strikes us as a person who takes a pragmatic approach to solving problems facing residents. He’s known for his ability get along with people, which is a real plus for serving the public.

Zivkovich, who works for Greene County as Human Resources Director, is just finishing her first term on council and seems to have great passion for the town and – just as importantly – ideas for how to do things. Her experience in Greene County government is certainly a plus for Brownsville.

We were impressed with Swords, who strikes us as a competent and fresh face. He seems genuinely interested in Brownsville’s well being. While he has not been in the borough for very long – an issue that led to his name being stricken from the primary ballot – he has been an active attendee at council meetings and we applaud his enthusiasm.

We want to encourage Swords to establish his residency, once and for all, and to remain active as council goes forward. It’s certainly good to see young people being involved in politics, and Swords has the potential to do great things down the road.
