Lady Vulcans shut out IUP
Amanda Heister scored all the goals for the Vulcans, leading California (Pa.) to a 4-0 victory Wednesday over PSAC-West rival Indiana (Pa.). Heister’s four-goal game was the first hat trick of her career, and she is now the all-time leading goal scorer in Vulcans history with 42. The senior forward is second in school history in points with 102, just shy of Sherry Valera’s 103.
Sam Regney, Erin Feltz, Kayla Fransko and Carley Work assisted on Heister’s goals.
Paula Jackson posted her second-consecutive shutout and ninth of the season, making four saves to keep Indiana off the scoreboard.
California remains tied with Mercyhurst for first place in the PSAC-West with 28 points on a 9-3-1 conference record. The Vulcans improve to 14-4-1 overall. Indiana slips into second place with a conference record of 8-4-1 and an overall mark of 12-5-1.
California closes the regular season Saturday on the road at Clarion.
Men’s soccer
California (Pa.) 2, Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) 1 – Nick Helbig scored both goals, including the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 84th minute, to lead the Vulcans to a non-conference victory over the visiting Cardinals.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 11th minute when T.J. O’Brien netted a penalty kick.
Helbig tied the scored at 35:11 on a header off a corner kick from Justin Taucher. Helbig’s second goal of the game, his sixth of the season, gave the Vulcans the victory.
California goalkeeper Charlie Dagnal turned aside four shots for his fourth win of the season.
California (12-6) finishes the regular season Saturday on the road at West Virginia Wesleyan. Wheeling Jesuit slips to 10-5-3 overall with the loss.
