George E. Wood Jr.
George E. Wood Jr., 88, of Uniontown, Pennsylvania died on Monday, September 7, 2009 in the Uniontown Hospital. He was born October 4, 1920 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, son of George E. Wood Sr. and Elizabeth Jenny Browning Wood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, MaryAnne Vidovic Wood; two brothers, James L. Wood and Paul B. Wood; and two sisters, Sara “Sally” Rush and Edith Garlitts Weidner.
George graduated from Uniontown High School, Class of 1938.
He enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Staff Sergeant during World War II during the European Theatre of Operations.
George first started to work for his father at Wood/Highland Dairy until it was sold to Garner Dairy and then to Fike’s Dairy as a Linesman before retirement.
He was a member of the General George C. Marshall AMVETS Post 103, Hopwood, Pa., where he was a Past Commander.
He served on the Easter Seals Society of Fayette County Board of Directors and was a Past Chairman and won the “Brace for Ace Award”.
George enjoyed spending time with kids, especially his grandson, taking them fishing and hiking. He was also active in scouting and youth sports.
George was a long time Pittsburgh and Fayette County sports fan, but always a die hard Red Raider Fan at heart!
George is survived by his wife, Frances Wood; one son, Mark Steven Wood and his wife Tommye Jean of Lemont Furnace, Pennsylvania; two daughters: Barbara Ann Wood of Portland, Maine, Patricia Lynn Wood-Yoemans and her husband Mark of Indiana, Pennsylvania; one sister, Marguerite Lowe, Uniontown, Pennsylvania; a sister-in-law, Sarah Smiley Wood of Washington, Pennsylvania; brother-in-law, Bob Beck of Randallstown, Maryland; and one grandson, Craig Steven Wood and his wife Patricia of Midlothian, Virginia.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the ANDREW D. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME INC., 80 Morgantown Street, Uniontown Pa., where the family will receive friends today, September 10, 2009 from 7 until 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 until 4 p.m. and 7 until 9 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday, September 12, 2009 from 10 until 11 a.m. when a service celebrating George’s life will be held at 11 a.m. with Rev. William D. Rodahaver officiating.
Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Uniontown, where Military Rites will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 47.
Family suggests donations may be made in his memory to the Easter Seals of Western Pennsylvania, Fayette County Site, Post Office Box 894, Uniontown, PA 15401.
John Knox Bible Class will hold Services in the Funeral Home this evening at 7:30 p.m.
