Herbert Jay Friedman
Herbert Jay Friedman of Washington, D.C. died on Thursday, August 13, 2009 following a lengthy illness. He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania in 1932, the son of Jennie and Benjamin Friedman.
He graduated in 1954 from Bethany College in West Virginia and received a Masters Degree in Chemistry from West Virginia University in 1961.
Early in his career, he worked for Chemical Abstracts a chemistry trade publication based in Columbus, Ohio.
In 1965, he relocated to Washington, D.C., where he was employed by the National Bureau of Standards.
Mr. Friedman retired in 2004 after working 35 years as a Toxicology Information Specialist at the National Library of Medicine, which is located on the campus at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He was based in the Specialized Information Services Division where he researched chemical structure, fielded inquiries from researchers and the public, and wrote for a library newsletter.
His memberships included the American Chemical Society, Washington Philatelic Society, and the American Numismatic Association.
Mr. Friedman is survived by his brother, Dr. Morton Friedman of Naples, Florida; two nephews: Dr. Laurence Friedman and Dr. Scott Friedman both of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; his companion of many years, Marcia Kass of Washington, D.C.
Graveside Service and burial were held at HOLY SOCIETY CEMETERY in Hopwood, Pennsylvania in conjunction with Tree of Life Synagogue, Uniontown, Pennsylvania.
