Uniontown possesses a great number of positive attributes. Some of these include the Bailey Park renovations, a local newspaper, and a fine library. Also, Lafayette Elementary School deserves recognition for its great strides on the PSSA battery. While many positive things are happening around town, the rental property ordinance proposal, the potential privatization of the public works department and the rumors about additional fire department cuts represent ominous clouds over the city.

First, the rental property proposal lacks enforcement teeth. Is a $100 or a $300 fine effective? Reprobate tenants probably spend more on illegal drugs and cheap liquor in less than a fortnight.

Further, Councilman Sproul asserts that blight prevention is a key aspect of this bill. Does this mean that a fresh coat of exterior paint allows one to have an open sewer in the basement? The ordinance should ensure interior and exterior compliance.

Second, what of the privatization of the public works division? Will a low bid contractor be both reliable and effective? For all we know an uninsured, illegal alien will be driving the snowplow.

Third, are the firemen on the chopping block once again despite a 4.5 mill increase and the savings from the massive layoffs? So much for safety.

Public input and transparency are essential in a democracy. City Hall should advertise public hearings regarding larger issues and provide the citizenry with a complete disclosure of the city’s financial status.
