Walter “Bud” Gates

Walter “Bud” Gates age 84 years of Smithfield, Pennsylvania passed away Wednesday September 23, 2009 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia. He was born in Springhill Township, Fayette County, Pa., on August 15, 1925, the son of the now late Charles Gates and Ruth Miller Gates.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Dennis Gates in 1996; two sisters, MaryMyers and Florence Nixon; and four brothers, Charles, William, Kenneth and Marion.

He attended the White House Free Methodist Church with his wife Dorothy for many years.

He was employed as a Heavy Equipment Operator for United States Department of Forestry.

He was a veteran of World War II having served with the United States Army. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 747, Point Marion, Pa., the Point Marion F.O.E. and American Legion.

He is survived by two daughters: Kathryn Kanosky and her husband John of Mannington, West Virginia and Janet Gates and her companion Thom Boynton of Ocoee, Florida; also three grandchildren and three great grandchildren; one sister, Dora Verbus; and very dear friend, Donna Hartman.

The family will receive friends in the JOHN F. BROWNFIELD FUNERAL H O M E, Smithfield, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Friday, September 25, 2009 until 11 a.m. when Services will be conducted with the Reverend Robert Whoolery officiating.

Internment will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Smithfield, Pennsylvania. Full Military Rites will be accordedat the cemetery by the General George C. Marshall AMVETS Post 103 of Hopwood, Pa.
