Serra Catholic overpowers Brownsville, 10-1

3 min read

REPUBLIC – Serra Catholic scored early and often en route to a commanding 10-1 road victory over Brownsville Thursday night. Serra Catholic (6-2, 4-2) scored its first two goals in the first 3:35 as it outshot Brownsville (0-9. 0-6) 26-5.

“We needed to be focused early in this game, since two days ago against Geibel we were not,” Serra Catholic coach Don Sabol said.

The Eagles scored four more goals in the first to take a 6-0 lead at the half.

“Serra Catholic is a good team because they have a lot of key players that have been playing soccer with each other for a long time,” Brownsville coach Kelli Sampson said. “Unfortunately, we don’t have that type of experience and chemistry yet. They have the skills and know how to anticipate and set one another up. We are not there yet, and we are working hard on that chemistry.”

Senior Brett Gwosden tallied three goals and two assists in the first half alone for the Eagles. Gwosden also scored a goal in the second half.

“Brett is a very talented ball-handling with a great shot,” Sabol said. “He works the corners well, and creates his own offensive chances.”

The lone Falcons goal was scored by sophomore Chelsea Ulery at 21:08 in the second half. Ulery has scored three of the four Brownsville goals in the 2009 season.

“Chelsea has great hand-eye coordination and a knack for scoring,” Sampson said. “She has been playing soccer since she was younger, and it shows out there. She has great finesse about her on the field.”

Senior goalkeepers Nick Sabol and Bornak each played in net for the Eagles and were credited with a combined two saves.

For the Falcons, sophomore goalie John DiDominic played the whole 80 minutes and recorded 12 stops in net.

Serra Catholic’s game on Saturday against South Allegheny has been postponed and will next be in action on Monday against non-section foe Riverview.

Brownsville will travel to Geibel Catholic on Saturday, and then will be in action on Tuesday against California, at the Trojans’ newly installed stadium by the school.

“Tonight we had three seniors out and are starting goalkeeper broke his finger and wasn’t playing in net for us,” Sampson said. “We have gotten some unlucky bounces the past couple of games, and if we can get some people healthy, and I hope we can turn things around. The California game is a big rivalry game for us and it’s going to be at their new place, which is exciting for everyone involved.”
