Uniontown neighborhood watch to meet
Members of a recently formed neighborhood watch group in Uniontown will discuss a proposed initiative to keep children safe at a meeting Thursday. Uniontown resident Russ Rhodes said discussion at the West End Neighborhood Watch meeting will focus on personal safety and the possibility of creating “safe havens” where children know they can go for help.
Rhodes said the Safe Haven Home initiative is based on the idea that residents, who are trained and cleared through background checks, will be given “Safe Haven” plaques to put on their home.
Children who are out playing and encounter problems can go to a Safe Haven home for help, Rhodes said, noting that the homeowner would then contact the police and the child’s parents/guardians.
Rhodes, who helped organize the West End Neighborhood Watch group, said the proposed initiative must be coordinated with police and will be discussed in further detail at Thursday’s meeting.
State police Trooper Brian Burden, community services and public information officer for the Uniontown and Belle Vernon barracks, will also attend the meeting and discuss personal safety.
Thursday’s meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Parish House of St. Peter’s Church on Morgantown Street.
People living in Uniontown from Main Street to Downer Avenue and from Oakland Avenue to Kensington Street are invited to attend the meeting, as are neighbors living on nearby streets who are interested in learning more about the neighborhood watch program.
