By Herald Standard Staff 1 min read

State Rep. Tim Solobay (D-Canonsburg) is encouraging volunteer fire and ambulance companies to apply for the 2010 Volunteer Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Services grant program. “These grants are a lifeline for our volunteer first-responder organizations that are struggling financially,” said Solobay. “The grants help to reduce the cost of such things as equipment purchases and training.”

Information and applications are available on the Office of State Fire Commissioner website www.osfc.state.pa.us

. The deadline to apply is Oct. 22.

Grant award amounts range from $2,500 to $15,000 and can be used for:

n Purchase or repair of firefighting, ambulance or rescue equipment;

n Training and certification of members;

n Purchase, repair or renovation of facilities; or

n Debt reduction.

Solobay co-sponsored legislation (H.B. 906, now Act 10 of 2008) that allocates funding for the grant program through 2012. He also noted the program receives $25 million annually from slot machine fees and taxes.
