Brownsville Time Capsule looks back over the years through the archives of the Brownsville Telegraph.

n Brownsville Ambulance Service Inc. has a new home. The ambulance service has moved into its new headquarters at the corner of Arch and Water streets and plans to celebrate with an open house on Sunday, Aug. 3. The new building is adjacent to the Moose home.

Construction of the $65,000 structure began this past September and was completed last month. Prior to this time, the ambulance was housed in an unheated garage attached to the borough building. Brownsville Borough provided use of the garage to the service.

Brownsville Ambulance Service Inc. is the first of three services in Fayette County to be certified by the state. It is staffed with 40 members, of whom seven are paramedics and 28 are EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians).

The president of the organization is Bill Brown, commander is Homer Yeardie, and vice-commander is Tom Wardman. Trustees are Linda Rohland, Bill Johnson and Edgar Wright.

n Randy Covington put on an amazing show as Brownsville Little League all-stars retained the District 9 Little League championship with a 10-0 shutout of the Connellsville all-stars. The 12-year-old Covington twirled a no-hitter and blasted two home runs and a double to lead the local team to victory. The right-hander fanned eight batters and walked four preventing any Connellsville hitter from getting a ball out of the infield in the entire game.

n In Legion baseball action, Scott Gaskill turned in one of his best performances of the season in hurling Brownsville to a 5-0 triumph over Fayette City Legion on the local diamond.

Gaskill scattered nine hits to help Manager Joe Mazurek’s club improve its record to 9-6, good for second place in the North Division. Barry Striblin, Jeff Slusarick, Bob Petrosky and “Moe” Teper hit hard for Brownsville, while Scott Naylor and Clint Rhodes recorded two hits apiece for Fayette City.

n The John A. Brashear Joint School Committee has elected Charles W. Slick of 15 Shaffner Ave. principal of Brashear Joint High School. Slick has been associated with Brownsville schools for 21 years after coming to Brownsville in 1939 following his graduation from Indiana State College. He also earned a master’s degree at the University of West Virginia.

Slick has been teaching business education subjects since he began his employment at Browns-ville. Beginning in 1943 he assisted as athletic coach in football and baseball, and in 1947 he was named head baseball coach.

n Brownsville Borough and Luzerne Township school boards have filed an appeal to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in an attempt to reverse a Fayette County Court ruling that keeps the Brashear school jointure intact for the coming year.

n The Steelers are coming to town as California State College hosts the local professional football team’s training camp. The Steelers first held their training camp at the California facility in 1958, returned to California last year, and will make it three years in a row this summer. Coach Buddy Parker and owner Art Rooney have both expressed approval of the site.

n George Gechoff, Roger Hotz and J. McKay led California IACC to a 3-0 win over the California Eagles in a California Softball League encounter.

n It was a busy session at the monthly meeting of the Redstone Township School Board as an instructor was hired and two others resigned.

Harry T. McHenry, Waynesburg High School coach, was elected physical education director and assistant football coach. McHenry will head the new physical education program to be instituted at the high school on a two-year basis. A full four-year course will be instituted later under provisions of the state Department of Public Instruction that all high schools must provide physical education programs. A woman instructor has yet to be elected.

Resignations were accepted from Catherine Buckley, domestic science teacher, and Geneva Jones, commercial teacher.

n In Telegraph League action, Johnny Kosuh hurled a no-hitter as the Vesta Six Rangers upset Newell A.C., 5-1, on the Newell diamond.
