Annual diaper derby a hit again

DUNBAR TWP. – America has a love affair with racing. Whether it is horses galloping around a track, NASCARs speeding by or people putting foot to pavement, spectators can be found glued to their televisions or along the track.

Yesterday evening, the Fayette County Fair had their own brand of racing in the Youth Building that gave visitors something to coo about: the diaper derby.

For more than 20 years, fair attendees have been cheering on their favorite baby in the annual diaper derby.

The first part of the competition featured a decorated diaper contest. Contestants paraded with a parent around the stage to display their latest fashion statement in diaper wear.

The winner of the diaper decorating contest was 12 month old, Uriah Pisarick of Pittsburgh. Pisarick, the son of Kristine and Dan Pisarcik was dressed as the famous superhero, Superman.

“I was very happy for him,” said Kristine Pisarcik about their big win.

Following the diaper decorating contest, it was time for the running of the babies.

“The crawling is the most fun,” said Tania Bosley, co-chairwoman of the diaper derby. “You will get a baby that will just stop and another one (baby) will come along and play with them. Their expressions are really cute.”

As the babies lined up, there was a look of determination on their parents’ faces as they coaxed their crawler across the stage.

After an intense showdown, crawling their way to victory were contestants Pisarcik, nine month old Lucas Holup of Grindstone son of Laura and Andrew Holup and eight month old Riley Allen of Uniontown daughter of Valerie Shaw and Jeffrey Allen.

“It was a lot of coaxing,” said Laura Holup, when asked for the secret of success.

Shaw said that her derby success was to bring out her keys and use them as a means of getting Riley Allen to reach the finish.

This year’s derby was sponsored by Attorney Douglas Sepic of Connellsville and Hartman Investments, LLC of New York City.
